How Much Money was Taken from Me?

Five months had passed since attending a home party in my new hometown.

It was March 17, 1980 and I soon learned that I'd been robbed by two other party plan consultants over the previous two years.

My year-old son and I were making St. Paddy's day cookies. While I was scooping up the flour and sugar and mixing the dough, I realized I needed more kitchen bowls and containers like those I was using.

My next thought was these items came from a home party, not from a store. That's when I had a brainstorm: I need more products, and they're available at parties from demonstrators. Maybe I could be one of the demonstrators and earn free stuff!

That's right. My assumption was that if I became a consultant I would be awarded with merchandise. I had no idea party plan people earned CASH!

I had attended perhaps three home parties over the past three years. Each time, the demonstrator talked about how the host was going to earn her choice of gifts. I honestly do not recall any mention of beginning a business and profiting with dollars. In addition to the consultant I met a few months previous, two other consultants had robbed me of the choice to join the company.

Now that I was thirsty for more product, my misconception was if hosts got some gifts, demonstrators got more! Thank heavens (literally) that I was thirsty for more product because I soon learned that my perception was wrong.

Next came my second misconception: I assumed that once I "signed up" the company would assign me to people who wanted to hold parties, I'd show up, demonstrate, sell, and make money.

Little did I know I didn't know. And once I was told, I knew I didn't know anyone who would be my first host!

I was going to quit before I began...until my leader explained the Grand Opening concept - where I'd host a party in my home and she'd be the consultant.

At last I met someone who took the time to explain how I was going to make money. I finally discovered a way I could be Robby's mommy, Bob's wife, earn money, and develop my talents--all on my own time and terms.

Once I was earning an average of $150.00 per week holding two parties (remember, this was 1980, the party average was not what it is today and the dollar was worth more than twice it is today!), I calculated how much money I had lost over the past two years because I had not been offered the business opportunity.

My questions for you:

1. How much money was I "robbed" of over the previous two years?

2. Is it fair for me to call the three party plan consultants who did not offer their business opportunity "Robbers?"
