My Recruiter Robbed Me!

Nearly thirty years ago I attended one of my first home parties. I was so thrilled to attend and flattered to have received the invitation because I was new to my city.

My husband, year-old son, and I had recently moved to his hometown of Midland, Michigan. We were living with his parents waiting for a hiring freeze to be lifted so he could begin work with a new employer. In the meantime, money was scarce and I was bored.

The party was a lot of fun and I had the opportunity to meet several new people. While my mother-in-law was a wonderful woman, I was craving friendships with women in my age group, especially those with young kids.

When I was "checking out" the consultant asked me if I wanted to host a party. I explained that we were living with my in-laws because my husband was in between jobs. I don't remember her response, but this is where she robbed me. No, she didn't calculate my order incorrectly.
Yes, she did deliver the product to the host who in turn delivered it to me. She robbed me because she didn't tell me how I could begin my own business! But I didn't know it at the time.

And she didn't know (she never asked) that I was looking for a way to make some money without working a full time job. This was a long time before the Internet where, with a few clicks, one can not only research businesses, but also buy a kit and have a web page up within hours.

No, this was back in 1979 when only a handful of companies offered a direct sales opportunity.

Over the next five months I searched the want ads for a job. None of the companies I spoke with offered a part-time, flexible opportunity. And, none of them offered me a path to pursue my interests and increase my talents. I was getting discouraged and even depressed.

However, that changed on March 17, 1980. And that's when I realized I had been robbed!

Stay tuned next week for the rest of the story....
